Regular visits to the hygienist are so important to maintain gum health but also identify your risk of periodontal disease.

What is periodontal disease

Periodontal diseases are mainly the result of infections and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth. In its early stage, called gingivitis, the gums can become swollen and red, and they may bleed. In its more serious form, called periodontitis, the gums can pull away from the tooth, bone can be lost, and the teeth may loosen or even fall out. Periodontal disease is mostly seen in adults. Periodontal disease and tooth decay are the two biggest threats to dental health.

Bacteria in the mouth infect tissue surrounding the tooth, causing inflammation around the tooth leading to periodontal disease. When bacteria stay on the teeth long enough, they form a film called plaque, which eventually hardens to tartar, also called calculus. Tartar build-up can spread below the gum line, which makes the teeth harder to clean. Then, only a dental health professional can remove the tartar and stop the periodontal disease process.

Specialist Gum Treatment.

Your hygienist can treat some gum problems. But if you have gum disease that’s getting worse, a complex case, or the risk of tooth loss, your hygienist will refer you to out lovely in house periodontist Eva Rodriguez. If you notice any of these common gum disease signs and symptoms, make an appointment with your dentist/hygienist to see if you should visit a periodontist.

Team News!

We are so very pleased to announce the arrival of our first Crown Street baby!

Elodie Sandra Janine Acquarone born on Friday 28th January.

A few of us headed off to London at the beginning of the month for a management training day. We all agreed how nice it felt to have face to face training days again rather than online. This training session focused on systems to manage the practice so we continue to provide a high level of care and experience to our patients as we grow. This is the first of 4 management meetings we have booked for this year ahead.

Recipe of the Month

Being the month of ‘Love’ who doesn’t love pancakes for breakfast!? Here is a completely sugar free pancake recipe and if you want to make this pancake’s mix even healthier, swap half of the plain flour with buckwheat or any wholemeal flour to add fibre and more protein.

1 cup plain flour

1 cup milk

1 egg

1/2 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp vanilla extract

pinch of cinnamon

tiny pinch of salt

1 tablespoon butter

Mix all dry ingredients together first (flour, baking powder, generous pinch of cinnamon, tiny pinch of salt).

Mix all wet ingredients together in a separate bowl or a jug (milk, egg, vanilla extract and melted butter).

Pour the wet mixture into the flour mix and mix well until all combined.

On a low to medium heat (griddle or a frying pan) pour small amounts of the pancake mix to create your pancakes. Once you see bubbles on one side, flip over and cook for another minute or so, until golden brown.

Serve hot with toppings of your choice (e.g. fresh fruit).

We love to read your feedback

“As a nervous patient, dental appointments have always filled me with dread, however under Genevieve’s care I am gradually overcoming my fears. She is an exemplary practitioner, informative and professional but very gentle too. On my last visit, I had some composite fillings applied to my front teeth to disguise my small gaps. To say I’m thrilled would be an understatement, I’m still smiling two days later. I can’t recommend the practice enough! Many thanks”

We really do enjoy reading your lovely feedback via Google or Facebook. Every month we go through the comments at our Monthly staff meetings. It allows us to see where we are doing well and where we can improve further. Please do keep them coming. If you would like to review us please use the QR scan code below.
